What is a Media Centre

A Media Centre is a media centric computer which allows you to access and enjoy the vast array of digital media available today , from a single device.
There are plenty of pre-built Media Centre systems available on the market, for example the AppleTV or similar. We have added the following details , to the site , for those of you who are interested in building such a device to your own specifications.

How do I build my own Media Centre

You can build a Media Centre PC based on Microsoft Windows XP Media Centre Edition, or you can use one of the many free alternatives available.

Probably the most comprehensive, free media centre package available is LinuxMCE , which incorporates a full media centre along with a centralised environmental and security control system.

There are alternative free Media Centre Solutions available, which will run off a live CD. These allow you to try out the built-in software, without affecting the underlying operating system on your computer.

Accessing media on the move

There is a growing requirement to access media on the move.
Whether you are using a mobile media device or running a media centre from a caravan or mobile home, you will need a good network connection, in order to fully utilise the internet from your Media Centre.
This is becoming less of a problem within cities , but if you need improved internet access in a remote area then there are DIY options available to improve your signal.

For a complete list of camping and caravan sites in the UK that offer Internet access take a look at AvailablePitch.com

If you want to increase the scope of your wireless internet access, you can do so by purchasing one of the many commercially available devices , for example the Hawking USB G-Dish adapter.

Alternatively you could build your own.
